On October 18, South Korea's National Intelligence Service confirmed that North Korea had sent 1,500 soldiers to Russia. Shortly thereafter, ASIAPRESS's team covered the North Korean-Russian border from the Chinese side. The number of North Korean troops sent to Russia has been growing by the day, with the South Korean and US governments estimating that around 12,000 have been sent so far. One of the main routes for the transportation of goods and people between North Korea and Russia is the Tumen River Bridge, located at the bottom of the Tumen River. ASIAPRESS reports in a video shot on the ground. (HONG Mari)
A railroad bridge connects Rasun, North Korea, to Hasan, Russia. The terminal at the North Korean side of the Tumangang Station was lined with locomotives, oil tanks, and unidentified cargo bearing the Russian Cyrillic alphabet. Nearby, the slogan "Toward a New Victory!" was displayed.
Comparing the terminal area to a photo taken by ASIAPRESS five years ago, the fuel tanks have been refurbished and new buildings have been erected. Russian and North Korean trains were stopped near the fuel tanks. Fuel from Russia is apparently stored here and transported to various parts of North Korea.
The presence of military personnel was also noticeable in the area. Soldiers are not usually stationed at stations in North Korea, but around the terminal at Tumangang Station, they were checking vehicles and standing guard at the yard. As the transportation of people and goods to and from North Korea has increased, the North Korean government has deployed soldiers to increase security.
