North Korea is notorious for its rushed construction. Under the propaganda slogan 'speed battle,' construction sites mobilize large numbers of workers day and night. These unreasonable large-scale projects have been repeated for over 60 years and continue unchanged today.
In the lower reaches of the Yalu River, damaged by heavy rains in late July 2024, construction of dozens of apartment buildings for disaster victims has been forced through since early August. Can people really live safely in these 'speed battle' apartments? We asked Professor Keiichi Imamoto of Tokyo University of Science, an expert in concrete material properties, to analyze photos and videos from the site.
